Per historical records, the Channel 11 allocation in Provo was first intended to be built as a commercial station. It launched as KLOR in 1958 but did not last. In 1962, Brigham Young University applied to buy KLOR's license, and the KBYU-TV callsign was issued. The station returned to the air with regular programs on Nov. 15, 1965, though the station was already on the air during the daytime for broadcasts to schools in association with the Utah State Department of Public Instruction (NET). KBYU-TV joined PBS in 1970. For Utahns, KBYU filled its programming with PBS children's shows and religious content, as well as popular shows like "I Love Lucy," "Perry Mason," "My Three Sons" and "The Andy Griffith Show." Love your enemies – Deseret News

3+ week, 22+ hour ago (325+ words) Editor's note: This essay was adapted from a talk given by Arthur C. Brooks at the Deseret News 175th Anniversary Gala on September 24, 2025. Those are your neighbors. Those people are your family. Those people aren't stupid and evil. They're just American citizens who happen to disagree with you on politics. That is where I come from. But that's not the point. The point is, nobody has the right to say that my mother is stupid and evil because of how she votes. And in that moment, motive attribution asymmetry came into view for me because I realized what we need to do as Americans in this political moment when we are so divided. We need to stand up to the people with whom we agree. You want to fix America? Let's stop standing up to the people with whom we disagree, which…...

1+ week, 1+ day ago (320+ words) Editor's note: This story was originally published on Nov. 22, 2024. On Nov. 22, 1963, John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, was shot to death in a motorcade in Dallas. And a nation moved from shock to grief to, well, back to normal. Kennedy was sitting beside first lady Jackie Kennedy as the motorcade moved through downtown Dallas on that fateful day. Texas Gov. John B. Connally, riding in the same car as Kennedy, was seriously wounded. Suspected gunman Lee Harvey Oswald was soon arrested for the crime, but died by gunfire at the hands of Jack Ruby within days. Within hours of the shooting, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as president. The Deseret News printed an "Extra," a quick edition of the news of the day. Coverage was extensive for weeks. The headlines read: "Kennedy assassinated"; "President killed by Texas…...

Deseret News archives: Who is Dow Jones, and why do we care about him?

On Nov. 14, 1972, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above the 1,000 level for the first time, ending the day at 1,003.16. Since first closing at 62.76 on Feb. 16, 1885, the Dow had been on a steady trend upward. Hitting 1,000 was a pretty big deal and the Deseret News pointed out the news. "History on Wall Street," read the headline of the day. So how did the Dow Jones Index come to be? In 1885, Charles Henry Dow, an American journalist who co-founded The Wall Street Journal, determined to found Dow Jones & Company with Edward Jones and Charles Bergstresser. Deseret News archives: Ogden Union Station opened in 1924 to great fanfare

1+ week, 1+ day ago (390+ words) Editor's note: This story was originally published on Nov. 21, 2024. One-hundred-and-one years ago, many Utahns relied on train travel and the Junction City was there to meet those needs. And the city's downtown crown jewel was Union Station. The week of Nov. 21, 1924, was a celebration as the new Union Station building was to be dedicated in Ogden. The building, which is now owned by the city and houses a trio of museums and other amenities, was formally dedicated on Nov. 22, though the cornerstone was laid on May 31, and Ogden residents had been touring the new building for several days. The new station replaced the prior station, completed in 1889 but destroyed in a 1923 fire. The Deseret News covered the unveiling of the new building, predicted to set Ogden up for business success in the years to come. "Confidence in Ogden growth is…...
